Will AI, Quantum Computing, and the Cloud Help Humankind, or Harm Them?

It’s easy to see that AI will change the world, but are you dreading the future where AI could possibly take over the world, or are you like me and see a positive future where AI will help humankind with everything from creating cures to diseases, to solving the problem of world hunger?

Depending on who you talk to, technology is either the best thing to happen to humankind or the future downfall of capitalism and the world as we know it. People watch movies and wonder if artificial intelligence will rule the world or birth the next terminator. The media frightens the working class with tales of machines that will take all the available jobs and leave us begging in the streets.

Technology increases exponentially. It’s no secret that machines and computers will take over some of the things that humans have traditionally done. But what most don’t realize is that technology will create newer and better opportunities — more than any it seeks to replace.

What if work as we know it could be done by machines, and humans were left to live their lives with a universal basic income, so they could pursue interests like art and music?

The cloud has already made it possible for businesses to access computing power they wouldn’t normally be able to afford. It’s possible for a company to run software in the cloud on a high-speed server and service their customers. In the past, that kind of access would be out of reach for most.

But how will technology like quantum computing and artificial intelligence work with the cloud? How will it ensure that business is always working at the speed of light?

The Future of Quantum Computing and the Cloud

Quantum Computing (QC) is much more powerful than traditional computing because it taps into the power of quantum physics. Where a traditional computer uses bits with a value of 0 or 1, QC uses qubits that can have multiple values. Through a process called entanglement, qubits can affect each other even when they are not connected. QC has the potential to be far more powerful than any type of computing that businesses use today, even supercomputers.

Why aren’t we seeing more quantum/cloud applications today?

Qubits are very sensitive to changes in environment. Small things can change the state of a qubit, and many firms are trying to solve this problem right now.

Some of the quantum systems in operation today are Quantum Cloud Service (QCS) from Rigetti computing (128 qubits), Google’s Bristlecone (72 qubits), and the IBM Q (50 qubits). The problem with absorbing the cost of running these systems is that no one has come close to testing a tiny part of the power available from quantum computing. Rigetti Computing publicized a $1 million prize for any team or person that develops an application to test the computing power of its computer.

Some technologies could eventually need the power available to them through quantum computers. Imagine the complexity and sophistication of AI if there were no restrictions on computing power. Envision how immersive a VR world could be if it used a small part of the power available in QC? What if we combine the two with the cloud to create a new kind of internet only dreamed about in books like Ready Player One? What if it would interface with the brain and there would be no need for a mouse, keyboard, or controller?

The applications for this kind of computing supremacy are endless.

Artificial Intelligence and the Cloud

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being implemented more and more. Even the cell phones we carry today feature AI to answer questions and provide information.

Every day, AI is becoming more and more human, and before long, we may never be able to tell the difference. Even at this early stage, we are using AI and deep learning in several unique ways as a tool for businesses worldwide. We are creating more sophisticated chatbots for customer service. Cloud applications are using AI for data analytics and making predictive recommendations.

Look at the types of AI technology: cognitive computing, machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing. We can understand their usage on different types of data and tasks. We can use AI for image processing and speech recognition. Then it is in turn used for applications like smart agents, taking and adjusting inventory orders, anticipating system or machine failures, recognizing computer threats, and spotting deceitful customer activity.

AI is available for all businesses and consumers these days. This change is thanks to factors like better computer hardware, performance improvements, cloud computing, and advances in AI technology itself.

Usage will increase in more traditional ways as AI improves in complexity and can engage with humans naturally.

The Future of Business and Work

For businesses to evolve and remain profitable, there must be a wider acceptance of technology. Applications that use artificial intelligence and the cloud will improve. They will do it through the implementation of quantum computing. Technology will drive automation and innovation.

The future of business and humankind will be brighter if we accept all that technology has to offer. This will involve us not giving in to fear and hysteria as computers and machines get smarter. We can’t get upset when they begin doing tasks that humans took care of in the past.

We can’t give in to fear about the future of technology, because AI, quantum computing, and the Cloud are here to stay, and will only get faster and smarter. We need to be able to embrace technology and use it as a tool to help humankind.
